GPS Tracker
I was recently sifting through the interwebs when I cam upon an article written in the Washington Post. Police departments across the nation have been using small GPS devices with magnetic mounts to track alleged suspects increasingly without warrants.
"GPS advocates said police do not need a warrant to track suspects electronically on public streets because the device provides the same information as physical tracking."
This basically means that cops can put a track practically anyone they want. In fact they are already doing it!
"A police officer could do the same thing with his or her own eyes"
Although some courts are upholding our privacy most are not.
Some cases have been broken and criminals have been apprehended but at what point are law enforcement officials going too far. I am personally against these measures unless warrants are issued. Some of you may be thinking, "if they are going after bad guys aren't warrants are just another step in the sluggish bureaucratic process that will be approved anyway. Why not just skip them?" While this may be true to some extent - with the Internet and electronic media warrants are issued more effectively than even 5 years go- the real point is that warrants exist to prevent illegal surveillance of good citizens.
Practically speaking, warrants may slow down the apprehension and investigation of possible criminals. The same way that chains on your tires might slow down your commute across an icy highway. Yet this not the intent. Snow chains like warrants exist to protect the population. In the case of warrants, they protect us from the prying eyes of the government. I for one associate all police enforcement with Vic Mackey. Warrants should be required!
If local governments insist on allowing these spying measures then what is preventing us, the people, from GPSing police vehicles. Why can't I go around and put a GPS device on every police cruiser and provide real time locations to communities across America. Wouldn't it be the same as having fellow citizens follow cruisers around and report to a central location. How would law enforcement officers like to be spied upon legally with the consent of the laws they are helping to pass.
Seriously, stop looking at me assholes. I'm not doing anything illegal! Really! But if you insist on sticking your nose in my gravy train I'll sure as hell stick my GPS in your dick holes! GPS the police!!
